The Chinese government, in the local Globaltimes news outlet, has announced the launch of a blockchain-based identification system for smart cities. The system aims to improve communication and data exchange between cities.

The system was developed by three institutes in Shijiazhuang City. All cities in China will be able to apply for their city’s identification code from Sunday.
"The low-level technology of the system is based on the blockchain and was developed by China on its own," said Zhang Chao, one of the system’s developers and director of the Zhongguancun Research Institute.
Adding: "The system will be independently distributed and managed by China with a single distribution rule, distributed storage permission and strong code."
