Cryptopia, the New Zealand cryptocurrency exchange, has switched to offline mode, citing a major hack and theft, as reported by the CoinDesk news agency.

On the morning of January 15, the exchange posted a message on Twitter, claiming the platform was hacked and the cryptocurrency was stolen: "(...) Cryptopia suffered a security breach (...) This resulted in a significant loss (...)"

Now, the representatives of the platform have not yet provided any information about the loss of tokens and cryptocurrency. Also, no possible compensation for damages to Cryptopia customers was reported.

The Exchange website (including the support pages and the official blog) is now completely disabled with the notification: "Currently, Cryptopia is in unscheduled offline maintenance. We'll be back soon."

Meanwhile, tweets from Whale Alert on Saturday showed that 13,391 ETH (almost 2.44 million US dollars) and about 48 million CENNZ tokens (about 1.18 million dollars) were transferred from the stock-exchange. On January 13, all funds were transferred from Cryptopia accounts to unknown wallets. There are no comments on whether these funds were transferred for storage by employees of the exchange or stolen by intruders.

Cryptopia also mentioned on its Twitter account that it notified and attracted relevant government agencies, including the New Zealand Police and the High-Tech Crimes Unit, which "jointly and actively investigate this issue as a serious crime."

"Until this crime is solved, The Cryptopia Exchange will remain in maintenance mode, with the termination of trade. We strive to solve this problem as soon as possible and we will keep you updated on every step." – Twitter, Cryptopia.

Cryptopia crypto-platform closed due to hacking before the end of the investigation – this is not the first case of hacking online exchanges over the past few weeks. Recall that recently Gate.io was hacked. 40 000 ETC were stolen from the exchange's wallets, which were then returned for unknown reasons.
